It is WRONG...just wrong

Posted on: June 16, 2008 6:20 am

Whether you are a Basketball fan or not, Im sure everyone can understand the principle of this...

The Cavaliers aren't going to let Zydrunas Ilgauskas play for Lithuania in the Olympics.

He is 33, they say it is because of his high injury risk.

He saw it as his last chance to play for his country, Lithuaina would've had a good chance for a medal if they had Ilgauskas.

Im sorry, but how can Cleveland control whther he plays for his country or not. Im sure there is a logical explaination, and Im sure I have read in the article. But it is wrong.

It is wrong.

They shouldn't have control. If Ilgauskas makes himself available, it is then Lithuaina's choice whether to select him or not. Why should his club have control of his availability for his country.

The Cavaliers should just let him play. If Im in Z's shoes Im saying, you let me play or I don't my contract bought out immediately, Im just not playing for your team.

The Cavaliers orginization, I dont know whether it is just me personally, but I am disgusted by what they are doing. Even if they do have legal and contractual rights to stop him playing fo rhis country, they shouldn't use them.

I understand where they are coming from, but they can't do that.

Imagine, in Rugby Union, if Auckland Blues say we don't want our star player playing for the All Blacks, cos he might get injured and not be able to play for us.

Just think, if the LA Galaxy didn't let David Beckham play for England because they wanted him to be fit and healthy for when he plays for them in MLS.

Or if the Houston Rockets didn't let Yao Ming play because he is oft-injured for the NBA and don't want higher risk of injury with more physical play. It would be horrible. (I know he is injured currently and may not play in the Olympics this year anyway, but that isn't the point)

Sure, you don't want your players to get injured but this is just ridiculous. I wouldn't want my player from my club injured either, but it's a matter of priniciple. It is his choice and his countrys choice whether he plays for Lithuaina or not.

Sorry If I have wrote a lot but this actually got me angry, I dont like this...at all.

Thoughts?

It is one of the more cruel and unfair aspects of life which we can do nothing about. (Been waiting to use that line.)

Still, I agree that it is utter bullsh!t that is really not making sense to me. He can't play because his team doesn't want him to get injured. Whose team does? No one wants to have one of their players injured, whether he's a star player or a role player.

However, not letting him play for his country, an opportunity that only comes once every four years, is absolutely ridiculous.

My opinion on that matter...

And Z's got to be one dissappointed fellow.

Agreed. I could understand if it happened during the season, but they shouldn't have any control over what he does with his personal life. It's not like he's doing tricks on a motorcycle. Let him play.
